About

BYU Independent Study was established in 1921 with a commitment to expand educational opportunities for people across the world. Over the last 97 years, our reach and our capacity to serve have increased tremendously — we now offer more than 550 courses that are accessible in all 50 states and in over 90 countries worldwide. We’re proud of our history and look forward to providing best-in-class online courses for many decades to come.

Our mission is to provide excellent online courses at the university, high school, and middle school levels. Pursuing this mission can have a strong effect on the course of education and increase BYU’s influence across the globe. We offer trusted, quality courses that are accredited by several trusted commissions*. With both online and blended learning courses, students receive instruction and content adapted to their needs, at their own convenience.

BYU Independent Study courses offer opportunities to fill gaps in course availability on campus, to recover lost credits in high school and middle school, or to meet other academic needs. Course enrollment is open to anyone, at any time of year, with a year to complete most courses. Because of our accreditation and quality courses, credits from Independent Study can be transferred to most educational institutions across the nation and around the world.

*BYU is accredited as an institution by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). BYU Independent Study High School and Middle School by AdvancED and Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS).
